Federal Dental Plans - February 8th 2024

Federal Dental Plans,

It is an exciting time for people who need dentures but do not have a private dental plan.

The federal government is rolling out their Canadian Federal Dental Plan which will include coverage for dentures. At the Mile Zero Denture Clinic we hope to help our customers navigate this new support from the government.

SunLife Insurance will be processing the claims through the Mile Zero Denture Clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Program:

Do you Qualify?

To qualify for the CDCP, you must:

  • Not have access to dental insurance
  • Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
  • Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
  • Have filed your tax return in the previous year

You need to meet all the eligibility criteria to qualify for the CDCP.

How To Apply?

You will receive a letter in the mail.

Letters including a personalized application code and instructions on how to apply are now being sent to seniors 72 and over.

If you receive a letter:

  • Follow the instructions in the letter to apply by phone.

If you do qualify, and have applied, wait to receive your welcome package from Sun Life before scheduling any dental appointments. It will explain how and when you can get your care paid for.

If you are eligible but have not received a letter:

Invitation letters will be sent out in phases beginning in December 2023. All letters are expected to be delivered by the end of March 2024.

These letters will be sent to the address you used in your 2022 tax return and only if you have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000.

If you have not filed your 2022 taxes, you may not receive a letter in the mail.

If your address is out of date, you should contact the Canada Revenue Agency to update your file.

If you have not received any information in the mail please call 1-833-537-4342, visit https://www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/dental/dental-care-plan.html or you can visit a Service Canada Center in person, near you.

How Do I Confirm I am Enrolled in the Federal Dental Program?

Sun Life will manage the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) for the Government of Canada.

Once you’ve applied and we've confirmed that you qualify, we'll share your information with Sun Life, who will enrol you in the CDCP.

Sun Life will then send you a welcome package, which will include:

  • Information on the CDCP
  • Your member card
  • Your coverage start date

When Can I Visit a Mile Zero Denturist?

The welcome package you receive from Sun Life will include the date you can start seeing a Denturist. Appointments can only be scheduled on or after that date for the eligible oral health care services to be covered under the plan. The CDCP will not reimburse you for services received before the start date.

Your start date will depend on:

  • When we receive your application and
  • When we complete your enrolment

The first group that will be eligible to visit an oral health provider will be as early as May 2024, starting with seniors.

When booking an appointment with an oral health provider, make sure to ask if they are participating in the CDCP. This will limit any unexpected costs that you may have to pay yourself.

Do I have to Re-Apply Every Year?

YES
Annual reassessment

You will need to meet the eligibility requirements each year to qualify for the CDCP. We’ll add more information later on the annual reassessment process.

How much will be covered?

The CDCP will reimburse a percentage of the cost, based on established CDCP fees and your adjusted family net income. You may have to pay additional charges directly to the oral health provider, if:

  • Your adjusted family net income is between $70,000 and $89,999
  • Your oral health provider charges more than the established CDCP fees, or
  • You and your oral health care provider agree to services that the CDCP doesn’t cover

If you make less than $70,000 per year, you are eligible for 100% of the oral health care service costs to be covered at the CDCP established fees.

If you make between $70,000 and $79,999, you are eligible for 60% of the oral health care service costs to be covered at the CDCP established fees.

If you make between $80,000 and $89,999, you are eligible for 40% of the oral health care service costs to be covered at the CDCP established fees.

Additional Charges

You may have to pay additional fees if:

  • CDCP fee Guide is less than the Denture Clinic’s Fee Guide
  • You agree to receive care that the plan doesn’t cover
